What to wear in a hamam, and what you are given there

Swimwear, from start to finish

On our visits you wear swimwear throughout — in the sauna, in the steam room, on the marble, for the kese and in the foam. Nobody is asked to be naked. Choose something you do not mind getting soapy: it will be wet and foamy by the end.

Because your swimwear will be wet, the change of underwear matters more than you might think. It is the difference between a comfortable ride back to the hotel and an uncomfortable one.

The peştemal

The peştemal is the traditional hamam cloth, a wrap worn over your swimwear. It is provided, along with a towel and slippers, so there is no need to bring towels from the hotel.

What to pack

• Swimwear or a bikini — you keep it on the whole time.
• A change of underwear.
• A hairbrush or comb, for afterwards.

Keep valuables to a minimum. The price of your booking is paid on the day. Drinks are not included in it, and tipping the attendants is optional; if you would like a drink or want to leave a tip, take a little extra money with you.

Getting ready on the day

Have only a light meal before your visit, and no alcohol. Be ready at your hotel at the pickup time we confirm with you. The hamam is not recommended during pregnancy, with heart or circulatory conditions, or if you do not cope well with heat or humidity; if you are under a doctor's care or have high or low blood pressure, read who should ask a doctor first.

For €20 per adult, the Basic Hamam gives you the ride from your hotel and back, time in the sauna and the steam room, the kese, a wash and massage in soap foam, then a basic aromatic oil massage that lasts about 20 minutes. See everything it includes.
